The squat symbol!
There are so many stories about this symbol and its meaning, that I dont know where to start.
From what I have heard, it possibly originated in the 1970s in the Netherlands (a country with a strong history of the fight for squatter's rights), as squatters took up mass efforts to find homes in abandoned buildings. I heave heard that the N often stands for nomad, and the symbol's basis is somewhat derived from old hobo signs of North America. Thus, the N is the time when one lives in a squat, and the arrow means the strength and resistance and flexibility - the will fight and/or move on and try again if eviction or physical movement comes. Resiliance and community! Taking back living spaces, and refusual to pander to capitalism's drive to enslave the people of the world and steal their labor and souls. Yeah, fuck that shit. Occupy and Resist! Squat the planet!
Having squatted myself in several countries, I have seen this symbol all across Europe and occasionally in North America From tree sit occupations in the UK, to urban punk multiplexes in Barcelona, shanty towns across the world, to rural utopian wonderlands in the Netherlands, entire squatted streets in London, to infoshops in Croatia, to community spaces New York City, to secret living spaces in San Francisco, giant warehouse homes in Detroit, an internet cafe in Amsterdam, tent cities all over, an old castle in the french countryside, or punk flophouse art collectives in Oakland.... they come in all shapes and forms and sizes.
With millions of houseless people throughout the world, tens of thousands of unused buildings, in light of all the recent home forclusures in the United States, why not bring a squatter's movement back to North America.. and the whole world? Why not take back homes, build community, demand the right to live in shelter wasted and owned by the rich? (without being evicted, harassed, or attacked by slaves of the state apparatus!)
Let's take it back.
